En décidant de recréer le Tofinou, Michel Joubert ne s'attendait peut-être pas à construire une série entière de bateaux alliant classicisme et modernité. Tofinou, qui veut dire en dialecte dahoméen « gens de la mer », fut dessiné et construit au Dahomey, à un seul exemplaire par le capitaine Merle en 1929. En 1987, à partir d'une coque unique, Michel Joubert construisait le Tofinou 7, un day boat classique qui est un peu le porte-parole de la marque. Il allait être suivi par le 8, puis le Tofinou 9.5 et aujourd'hui le Tofinou 12. Hounbonne est un Tofinou 9.5, propriété de Jean-Paul Mattéi président du club international Tofinou . C'est un bateau, facile à manoeuvrer par tous les temps, très doux à la barre. Les « enfants du Capitaine Merle » seront plusieurs à régater lors des Régates Impériales.

In 1987, from a unique model hull, Michel Joubert started building the Tofinou 7, a classic day boat which is so far the Tofinous « speaker ». It was followed soon by the 8, then the Tofinou 9.5, and today the Tofinou 12. Hounbonne, owned by Jean-Paul Mattéi, belongs to the 9.5's. She is a day boat, easy to operate by any weather, very soft at the helm. The « Captain Merle children » will be racing along with the other big boats at the Régates Impériales 2010.
