Conçu par le « sorcier de Bristol », Nathanaël Herreshoff dans le Maryland,iIl est un des très rares survivants (ils étaient 14) de la classe des New York 40, ces « Roaring Forties » construits entre 1901 et 1917 pour les membres du New York Yacht Club.
On les nomme ainsi en raison de leur longueur à la flottaison de 40 pieds.
Rowdy a remporté au cours de sa carrière de nombreuses courses.
Trouvé et acheté sur ebay par Graham Walker, il a été restauré et est désormais basé à Cannes.
Depuis, il participe aux régates du CIM. Il a remporté le trophée Rolex en 2008.
